Thousands of people have been queuing to view the body of Nelson Mandela -- who is lying in state at the government buildings in the South African capital, Pretoria.

In near silence, Nelson Mandela's coffin was carried to the courtyard of Pretoria's Union Buildings that were once a towering symbol of apartheid. Now, a sacred place of rest for an anti-apartheid icon.

The first to pay their respects were  his widow, Graca Machel, and his second wife Winnie followed by family, friends, world leaders and once time foes.

But first and foremost it was an occasion not for the high and mighty, but for the ordinary people whose lives Nelson Mandela transformed.

Thousands queued in the stifling heat for the buses arranged to transport them to the Union buildings.

A clear shift from the celebratory atmosphere in recent days, the tone was much more sombre as the focus shifted from Nelson Mandela's life and achievements, to the loss of a great leader.
