Thousands of migrants have been rescued from the Mediterranean this weekend, aid organisations say.

The organisations Iuventa Jugend rettet, MOAS and Sea-Eye had rescued about 3000 people from rubber dinghies and wooden boats some 20 nautical miles from the Libyan coast on Saturday alone, the captain of the rescue ship Iuventa, Kai Kaltegaertner, told dpa.

Some 1800 to 2000 people had been rescued on Friday, he added.

Kaltegaertner said aid organisations working in the region feared that more boats with migrants might be discovered overnight.
