Thousands vote early in Mayo by-election

Almost 15,000 people have cast early ballots in the Mayo by-election ahead of Saturday's poll.

The leading contenders for the Mayo by-election are gearing up for the final full day of campaigning with pre-poll centres and local commuters likely to be the centre of attention.

Rebekha Sharkie from the Centre Alliance and Liberal Georgina Downer are battling it out for the seat, in a contest most pundits believe Ms Sharkie will win on Saturday.

The most recent opinion poll had her well ahead on a two-party basis and likely to extend the five per cent margin she secured at the 2016 federal election.

Ms Sharkie on Thursday said the campaign had been long and thanked her supporters and volunteers.

"This is a campaign of people power through and through and I am so grateful for your support," she said.

But Ms Downer will campaign until the close of voting in a bid to follow in the footsteps of her father, former foreign minister Alexander Downer, who held Mayo for more than 20 years.

On Thursday, she reaffirmed promises to deliver improved infrastructure along the South Eastern Freeway.

"If elected, I will fight for up to $40 million of funding for the South Eastern freeway so that our hills community can get home sooner and safer," she said.

About 100,000 are eligible to vote in Mayo with almost 15,000 already casting early ballots.
