Threat levels in Australia, US and UK

Australia's terrorism alert level has been raised from medium to high. How does it compare to the US and UK?

AUSTRALIA

  •    Extreme: Terrorist attack is imminent or has occurred.
  •    High: Terrorist attack is likely.
  •    Medium: Terrorist attack could occur.
  •    Low: Terrorist attack is not expected.
  •    Currently: High (raised from medium on September 12, 2014)
  •    Last time threat level was extreme: Never. Threat level was raised form low to medium following the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the Bali bombings in October 2002.

THE US

  •    Severe (Red)
  •    High (Orange)
  •    Elevated (Yellow)
  •    Guarded (Blue)
  •    Low (Green)
  •    Currently: Elevated
  •    Last time threat level was severe: August 10-September 14, 2006 in response to British authorities disrupting a major terror plot to blow up an aircraft. The threat level applied to commercial flights from UK. Extended to mid-September 2006 to coincide with the 5th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

THE UK

  •    Critical: An attack is expected imminently.
  •    Severe: An attack is highly likely.
  •    Substantial: An attack is a strong possibility.
  •    Moderate: An attack is possible, but not likely.
  •    Low: An attack is unlikely.
  •    Currently: Severe
  •    Last time threat level was severe: August 1-10, 2006 in response to authorities disrupting a major terror plot to blow up an aircraft.
