Three Aussie sailors to make Oly debuts

Three Australian sailors will been selected to make their Olympic debuts in Rio.

Jaime Ryan and Carrie Smith were fierce junior rivals but have joined forces to make their Olympic sailing debuts in Rio.

The pair, both 21, have been selected for the women's 470 event at the August games.

"Jaime and I were rivals in the youth classes which is very funny," Smith said on Thursday.

"We have good memories and I think that makes us stronger and bond more as a team."

Ryan's brother Will has already been selected to compete in the men's 470 with London gold medallist Mat Belcher.

"I think it's the coolest thing that I get to be on tour with my brother," Ryan said.

"He's been on the circuit for a few years more than me, and has been such a huge help in every part of my sailing over the years, there is no way I would be at this stage without him."

Smith started sailing when she was just two years old but missed 12 months on the water in 2014 and 2015 after complications from stomach surgery.

Ashley Stoddart, 22, has been selected to make her Olympic debut in the Laser Radial.

She started sailing at age seven and set her sights on Olympic competition eight years ago.

"The Olympic dream for me was lit in 2008 when I watched Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson win their gold medals in the women's 470 in Beijing for Australia," Stoddart said.

Stoddart's first international event was in Rio in 2009.

There have been selection appeals in the Finn and 49er FX classes, with final selections to be announced once that process is finished.
