Three bidders have been shortlisted to build Melbourne's $5.5 billion Western Distributor toll road.

The bidders include John Holland and CPB Contractors, Lend Lease Engineering and Bouyges Construction, and an international consortium of Salini Impreglio, Fluor Australia and Lane Worldwide Infrastructure.

The Western Distributor will connect the West Gate Freeway and CityLink, with the contract set to be signed in late 2017.
