Three charged over Tottenham 'Yid' chants

Three men have been charged for chanting the word "Yid" during Tottenham matches, after police warned fans in October about using the word.

British police have charged three people for allegedly chanting the word "Yid" during Tottenham Hotspur matches.

The men were charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words, Scotland Yard police headquarters said in a statement on Tuesday.

Gary Whybrow, 31, and 24-year-old Sam Parsons allegedly chanted the word during a Europa League home game against Moldovan side FC Sheriff on November 7 last year.

Peter Ditchman, 52, is charged in relation to an English Premier League home match against West Ham United on October 6. Ditchman is also charged with cocaine possession.

Yid is a term for a Jew that is often considered derogatory, but Spurs fans often chant the word as an act of defiance against those who taunt the north London side's links with the local Jewish community.

Scotland Yard warned in October that anyone using the inflammatory "Y-word" during football matches could be arrested.

News of the charges came the same day that West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka was charged by the Football Association over an allegedly anti-Semitic salute.

The 34-year-old French striker performed the 'quenelle' salute, putting one arm across his chest and straightening the other, during West Brom's 3-3 draw at West Ham in the Premier League last month.
