Three homes destroyed by fire in north NSW

More than 70 fires are burning across NSW, with three homes destroyed in Kremnos in the state's north.

Three homes have been destroyed in bushfires in northern NSW in an ominous sign ahead of the official start of the bushfire season.

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) said 27 fires were burning in the Clarence Valley area with 100 firefighters trying to contain them.

The three homes were burnt down near Kremnos, south of Yamba.

Firefighters were being assisted by 11 aircraft and heavy machinery, said RFS spokesman Matt Sun.

He said the McGills Road fire was the blaze of most concern at the moment.

"Surveys are still being undertaken in the area to determine the exact loss, these are just preliminary figures at the moment," Mr Sun told AAP.

Firefighters spent the weekend controlling the blazes with thousands of hectares of land burnt.

With winds easing, firefighters were trying to take advantage of the calmer conditions.

There were 75 fires burning around NSW in total, 25 of them uncontained.

"This is a larger than usual number of fires for this time of year," Mr Sun said.
