Three in court over Vic river body

Three men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a man whose remains were found in a Melbourne river.

Three men have been remanded in custody after appearing in court accused of murdering a man whose dismembered body parts were found in a Melbourne river.

The remains of Brendan David Bernard, who was known to police, were found last month in the Maribyrnong River.

Con Spaliaras, 31, Matthew David Brennan, 36, and Edward Lionel Hill, 46, all of North Melbourne, are accused of murdering Mr Bernard, 32.

They did not apply for bail in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where they were remanded in custody.

Their case was adjourned until July 21 while "complex forensic evidence" is prepared.

A lawyer for Spaliaras asked in court that his client been seen by a psychiatric nurse while in custody, because he was "withdrawing" from a drug of dependence and suffering from mental health issues.

Court documents say police believe Mr Bernard was killed between January 27 and January 28 at North Melbourne.

The murder hunt began after a runner spotted Mr Bernard's severed forearm, marked with a distinctive red devil tattoo, floating near a restaurant on February 5.

A search of the river unearthed more of his remains.
