Three people have died and two have been injured after being caught in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps, media reports say.

Public broadcaster RTS reported that the five were on a ski tour near the Great St. Bernhard Pass on the border between Switzerland and Italy when they were hit by an avalanche shortly before 2pm on Saturday.

RTS reported that the skiers were Italian.

It cited Valais police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet as saying that one of the survivors was resuscitated in hospital, while the other suffered only light injuries.
