Three spectators killed at Portugal rally

Two children were among three people killed when a car veered off a track at a rally in Portugal and slammed into spectators.

Three people, including two boys aged eight and 13, have been killed after a car ploughed into spectators at a rally event in northern Portugal.

A 50-year-old woman also lost her life when the car veered off the track following a sharp bend after it had crossed the finishing line at the race in Guimaraes on Sunday.

Five people were injured and two of them, a 50-year-old man and a woman of 18, are in a critical condition, emergency services said.

The driver of the car has been taken to hospital suffering from shock, they added.

The accident happened shortly after the start of the first stage of the rally. The event was suspended after the tragedy.
