Thrills and spills ahead in Qld parliament

Queensland Parliament returns for another year of thrills and spills.

WHAT'S ON THE AGENDA?

-- A number of laws proposed by the state's Labor government are almost ready for debate.

-- The big ticket items are more or less social policies and include giving the terminally ill a choice about when they want to die, human rights protections and criminalising revenge porn.

-- The government will also look at wage theft, which it says is affecting one in four workers and costing the state economy $1.2 billion a year.

-- Meanwhile, the Liberal National Party will focus on traffic issues in the state's southeast, building water security in the north and the divide between the city and the bush.

-- It will also seek more transparency on government decisions, like changing the name of the state's children's hospital.

-- Let's not forget a federal election is brewing. On a state level, both parties will be watching how that plays out and what it means for them.

--

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE LAST YEAR?

-- The Opposition is down an MP after booting Whitsunday member Jason Costigan from the party over harassment claims from two young women.

-- Mr Costigan has ignored urging from LNP leader Deb Frecklington to quit politics, and will instead stay on as an independent.

--

ARE SOME THINGS STILL THE SAME?

-- Of course, because it's politics.

-- Expect to see some of the same old debates play out and a possible revisit to issues that have already been given a fair go.

-- Some mud slinging across the chamber is also guaranteed.
