Thurston favourite for Players' Award

Johnathan Thurston is favoured to win his third successive RLPA Players' Player award, after another standout NRL season.

Johnathan Thurston is set to walk away with his fourth Rugby League Players' Association Players' Player Medal this week.

Another stellar NRL season from the North Queensland superstar has him as the favourite for the award to be announced in Sydney on Tuesday night.

It would be the third successive season Thurston has won the award.

Thurston claimed the medal in 2005, 2013 and 2014. The Cowboys skipper is one of five finalists for the award alongside Ben Hunt, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, James Tedesco and Greg Inglis.

Players vote on a 3-2-1 basis on their opposition after each match of the regular season. The votes are tallied at the end of the 26 premiership rounds.

With talk the Dally M awards, held during grand final week, could be boycotted due to industrial action from players, the RLPA awards could be the only gongs handed out this season.

In other categories, Warriors outside back Tuimoala Lolohea, stand-in Melbourne fullback Cameron Munster and Manly prop Jake Trbojevic all look most likely to claim the Rookie of the Year award.

Under-20s nominees for the National Youth Cup player of the year are Latrell Mitchell, Te Marie Martin and Viliame Kikau.
