Medical examinations have found 18 children in Fukushima Prefecture with thyroid cancer, two years after the 2011 nuclear crisis.
NHK World reports that alongside the already-diagnosed cases, a further 25 children are suspected to have the cancer as well.
The findings were reported to a prefectural panel earlier in the week, but it cannot be determined if the cancers are directly related to the March 2011 accident.
Thyroid cancer in children is relatively rare. In Japan, just 46 people under 20 years were diagnoised in 2006.
Fukushima prefecture is providing medical checkups to all children 18 years or under at the time of the disaster, with 210,00 of the 360,000 young residents already tested.
