Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational midway through the final round with a back injury, putting his place at next weeks PGA Championship in jeopardy.
Woods winced in obvious pain following his tee shot on the ninth hole on Sunday and immediately pulled the plug on his title defence, although at three-over on his round and four-over for the tournament he was already a non-factor.
Woods took three months off earlier in the year after back surgery and felt some pain after the second shot on the second hole of his Sunday round but battled through eight and a half holes.
"It happened on the second hole when I hit my second shot, I fell back into the bunker," Woods said.
"I just jarred it, and it's been spasming ever since.
"It's just the whole lower back. I don't know what happened."
The 38-year-old struggled to remove his golf shoes such was the intensity of the pain he was feeling.
The 14-time major champion is now in serious doubt to play at Valhalla in Louisville next week for the PGA Championship, the venue from where he claimed the Wanamaker Trophy in 2000.
When asked if he would be able to play at Valhalla, Woods could only offer an "I don't know", as he was whisked away from the course.
