Tigers 1-164 at tea v Qld

Tasmania have moved to 1-164 at tea on day one of their Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Ex-Australian opener Ed Cowan has taken the crease in a last gasp Test audition ahead of the Ashes in Tasmania's Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Brisbane on Wednesday.

At tea on day one, the Tigers are 1-164, with Cowan not out 19 and opener Jordan Silk unbeaten on 68 in an unbroken 41-run second wicket stand.

Queensland's Test quick Ryan Harris (0-52 off 15 overs) has toiled hard but without much luck on a lifeless wicket.

Silk was dropped by Peter Forrest off Harris on nine.

And Cowan edged Harris through a vacant slip cordon late in the middle session.

Silk shared a 123-run opening stand with Mark Cosgrove (74) who was caught at cover by Bulls skipper James Hopes off Cameron Gannon (1-17 off 12 overs).

The stage is set for Tigers skipper George Bailey to impress after Tasmania won the toss at the small, batsman-friendly Allan Border Field.

The match was switched to the suburban ground due to renovation work at the Gabba ahead of this month's Ashes opener.

Bailey is considered the hot tip to snap up the No.6 Test spot after amassing 478 runs at an average of 95.6 in Australia's 3-2 one-day series loss in India.
