Their membership tally board in the club foyer ticked over by another 300 before Richmond players even made it out for Friday morning training but coach Damien Hardwick is expecting big numbers to be harder to come by against North Melbourne on Sunday.

The Tigers and Kangaroos have the two tightest defences in the AFL with Hardwick saying his team are up for the challenge that in-form North will bring.

The Kangaroos showed their mettle last round against Sydney holding on for a two-point win at their SCG while Richmond are riding a five-game winning streak.

"We're looking forward to the challenge of North Melbourne as they've been outstanding form," Hardwick said.

"They're the second best defensive side in the competition behind us so it's going to challenge us and the way we want to play.

"The great thing about our boys is that they crave the contest and that's what North Melbourne are going to bring."

Despite the teams avoiding the forecast Melbourne rain by playing under the Etihad roof, Hardwick said the ground usually produced a "dour-type affair".

"It's a bit easier to defend (than the MCG) so it's rarely a high-scoring game but how it pans out we're not too sure as we're both really capable offensively," Hardwick said.

"They've got big Ben Brown who's an exciting player and Mason Wood, he looked a star last week but we've got some capable cattle as well."

Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin is a certain starter after overcoming a knee injury which forced him out on game day last round against Fremantle.

The star midfielder trained however Hardwick said they would continue to take a cautious approach with the return of Dion Prestia (calf) and Shaun Grigg (hamstring).

"We're hoping (Prestia's) a week but whether it turns into two, we're not too sure.

"It's on the minor side but once again with Dion, he's such an important part of our team that we'll be very conservative with those sort of guys," Hardwick said.

"Shaun Grigg's pretty much the same - touch and go whether he could've played this week."
