Former Richmond captain Chris Newman is in doubt for the Tigers' AFL season opener against Carlton after being diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm.
Newman, a veteran of 251 games, underwent recent tests after experiencing discomfort at training and was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia.
The 32-year-old will definitely sit out the Tigers' final NAB Challenge clash against North Melbourne on Saturday and is also in serious doubt for the big MCG clash against the Blues on April 2.
"Chris has seen a cardiologist specialising in this area, and he has confirmed that the diagnosis is a relatively benign one," Richmond general manager of football Dan Richardson said in a statement.
"However, the decision has been made to rectify the situation with a procedure to eliminate the trigger of the abnormal cardiac rhythm.
"The procedure is relatively straightforward and has been done successfully in many high level athletes, including AFL footballers.
"We are expecting that Chris will be off training for a couple of weeks, and then should be able to resume full training, and play soon after."
Newman captained the Tigers for four years before passing on the reins to Trent Cotchin in 2013.
