Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer spent a "shivery" night in the rugged Victorian bush after losing his glasses while bushwalking.

Mr Fischer was hiking on Mount Jack, in the north of the state, but ran out of daylight after dropping his glasses and having to retrace his steps to find them.

"I made the safety decision to stop scrub-bashing lest I twist an ankle, and walk out safely in the daylight," he told radio station 3AW on Wednesday.

The 69-year-old munched on an apple to give him "sufficient energy to keep scrub bashing" and made his way out at first light on Wednesday.

He had called his family on his mobile phone that night to tell them he was OK and says a search party was sent out against his family's wishes.

"I told the family there is no need for any search whatsoever," he told 3AW.

He spent the night looking up at planes passing overhead and imagined all the people enjoying their wine and cups of coffee and he shivered through a chilly night of six degrees.

Police and SES had commenced a search, which was called off when Mr Fischer resurfaced at his friend's farm.
