Time running out for government to pass laws protecting gay students

Time is running out for the government to meet its promise to introduce laws this week protecting gay students from discrimination at religious schools.

Laws protecting gay students from discrimination at religious schools may be introduced on Thursday, but negotiations are still underway between the government and Labor.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said 10 days ago he wanted to change discrimination laws to make sure students could not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality.

"We'll just get that sorted in the next fortnight, I hope we can do that without a whole bunch of posturing and hoopla," he told reporters on October 14.

But with one sitting day left before parliament goes on a break, the coalition is short on time to get the laws through.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Christian Porter said it remained the government's intention to introduce the bill this week.

"It is preferable to have an agreed bill to introduce," the spokesman said.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus said Labor received the legislation on Wednesday evening.

"We will scrutinise the government's proposals thoroughly," he told AAP.

"We will continue to work constructively with the government. We want to end discrimination against LGBTI+ kids." Mr Dreyfus said.
