A TIMELINE OF EVENTS LEADING UP TO AND AFTER THE DEATH OF IRANIAN ASYLUM SEEKER HAMID KHAZAEI

2013

Aug 7 - Hamid Khazaei enters Australia's migration zone at Christmas Island and is detained.

Sept 6 - Khazaei is transferred to the Manus Island Refugee Processing Centre in Papua New Guinea.

2014

Aug 23 - Khazaei first seeks treatment at the Manus Processing Centre two days after he developed flu-like symptoms and a small leg wound. He stays overnight.

Aug 24 - His condition worsens and the presiding GP requests a blood test to be done in Australia, which takes seven to 10 days.

Aug 25 - Doctors file an urgent request for Khazaei to be evacuated that afternoon, but Australian authorities delayed the evacuation, recommending he be treated at a hospital on Manus.

Aug 26 - Khazaei's leg wound blackens overnight, his oxygen levels drop, and his overall condition deteriorates rapidly. He is transferred to Port Moresby where he stays overnight and has a heart attack.

Aug 27 - After a doctor reports he's showing signs of "brain death", Khazaei is transferred to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.

Sept 3 - Khazaei is confirmed as brain dead.

Sept 5 - Life support is turned off, and he dies.

2017

Feb 13-21 - Inquest into Khazaei's death is held.

2018

July 30 - Coroner rules death was preventable, and tells Australia to improve the conditions of medical facilities at detention centres, or bring asylum seekers needing treatment to Australia.
