Tiny SA town set to be Supercars hit

Less than 2000 people live there but the South Australian town of Tailem Bend is set to shake up the Supercars' season for the first time next weekend.

The tiny South Australian town of Tailem Bend will stun Supercars fans, according to reigning Bathurst champion David Reynolds.

Located about 100km south-east of Adelaide, the series will race for the first time at the new multi-million dollar Bend Motorsport Park from August 24-26.

Less than 2000 people live in the town, but that number will skyrocket for the Supercars' 11th round of the season.

The sport has never been afraid to head away from big cities, with Symmons Plains, Phillip Island, Winton, Bathurst and Pukekohe examples of small towns holding major rounds.

With the Bend opening only this year, Holden ace Reynolds has high hopes for what it will hold for drivers and spectators.

"It's a level playing field for everyone because no one's got any data on the track or driven a Supercar there before," Reynolds told AAP.

"I'm really looking forward to it because the layout's cool and probably behind Bathurst it's probably the next best track we go to ... it's a world-class facility.

"A brand new, really good track surface, good pit lane, there's a hotel there and a bit of museum and the garages are big and spacious.

"It will be an epic event and every time you go to a new track it throws up new challenges."

After a sole race at Sydney Motorsport Park for the sport's first night race in Australia in 21 years, drivers will get two cracks at bringing home points at Tailem Bend.

The final six rounds of the season usually throw up some unpredictable results and this year should be no different.

Ford's Scott McLaughlin and Holden rival Shane van Gisbergen are battling it out at the top of the championship standings.

Reynolds is back in fifth, behind Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, but has two victories to his name this year and will fancy his chances of adding to that total.
