Houseplants that are potbound should be repotted in spring. One sign of congestion is roots emerging from the drainage holes. Thick fleshy roots should be teased out by hand; fibrous ones can be scored and trimmed back a little. Use a pot that is only slightly larger than the old one, and backfill with fresh potting mix. The roots should be soaked well after repotting.
