Tip of the week
Vegetable and flower beds that will be left bare at season's end should be sown with a winter cover crop to suppress weeds, prevent erosion and add nutrients when they are dug into the soil next spring. Vetch, crimson clover and winter rye should be sown by October to provide an effective cover. Seed is available from feed stores or mail-order nurseries that sell vegetable seed.
