Tips for parents on social media dangers

Police tips for parents and internet users to protect against social media dangers.

SAFE INTERNET USE - TIPS FOR PARENTS:

* Be aware of how much time your child spends on the internet.

* Spend time talking to your child about the dangers associated with online conversations.

* Keep the computer in a room the whole family can access, not a child's bedroom.

* Consider computer blocking software.

* Check your child's email randomly.

TIPS FOR INTERNET USERS:

* Do not send a picture of yourself to someone you don't know.

* Never give out personal information, including your name, address or phone number.

* Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone you have only chatted with on the internet.

* Consider disabling the GPS function on applications as this lets people know where you are located.
