Titans appoint new NRL assistant coach

Gold Coast coach Neil Henry has filled the second and final assistant's role at the Titans, hiring Brian Smith's son Rohan to the NRL club.

The son of former NRL coach Brian Smith has been appointed as an assistant coach at Gold Coast.

Rohan Smith will join Terry Matterson as an assistant to new Titans head coach Neil Henry for the 2015 campaign.

The 33-year-old has already spent 11 years in the game rising through the coaching ranks, first joining Daniel Anderson's staff at the Warriors in 2003 at age 21.

After time at the Sydney Roosters, Newcastle and Penrith as well as a stint in England, he returned to the Warriors this year and led the New Zealand-based club's reserves into the NSW Cup finals.

Henry said Smith joins the Titans with his credentials already well established.

"Rohan has gained a good reputation in the NRL as a very smart emerging coach, has done an extensive apprenticeship and I am very fortunate to have him join our staff," he said.

"He is particularly passionate about helping develop young players and has the benefit of not just working as an assistant, but as coach of his own teams at the Warriors and Knights."

Smith's father Brian played first grade with St George and South Sydney before a long coaching career that took in stints at the Dragons, Parramatta, Knights and Roosters.

Smith says he's excited about being part of Henry's rebuilding of the embattled Titans.

"The club is entering a rebuilding phase and that's something I've always wanted to be involved in - developing rather than inheriting - so I feel fortunate to be able to play a role in taking the club forward," he said.
