Titans coach keen on homesick Milford

Gold Coast coach John Cartwright has suggested the Titans would be keen to sign Anthony Milford if Canberra grant the teenager an early release.

Brisbane may find themselves in a south-east Queensland bidding war after NRL rivals Gold Coast indicated they're keen on homesick Canberra star Anthony Milford.

The 19-year-old has asked the Raiders for a release from his contract as he seeks a return to Queensland to be nearer his father, who is ill in Brisbane.

The Broncos are seen as the most likely destination if Milford is let go by the Raiders but coach John Cartwright suggested the Titans would also table their own offer if told the Queensland under-20s captain was on the market.

"We haven't spoken about it but if Anthony was on the market he's one of the better young talents in the game. He can play a lot of different positions," Cartwright told reporters on Friday.

"I'm not right across the situation as far as why he's after a release or what Canberra's stance on it is. Managers generally get in touch with you.

"If he wants to move home there's only two clubs, us or the Broncos, so I'd say if that was the case he'd be in touch with us and he's certainly a player you'd love to have on your books."

Another player chasing a return to south-east Queensland for family reasons is Dally M medallist Ben Barba, who is expected to join the Broncos from Canterbury with his ex-partner and young children heading back north from Sydney.

The Titans already have Barba's younger brother Marmin on their books but Cartwright said there had been no discussion between the fullback and the club.

"Again it's geographical. Ben's family is moving up here and he wants to move home," Cartwright said.

"Us and the Broncos are the two logical clubs but no, we haven't spoken to Ben or his manager."
