Titans not just about Hayne: Matterson

Gold Coast stand-in coach Terry Matterson says the focus on Jarryd Hayne at the Titans is overblown and wants the spotlight on the team as a whole.

When it comes to talking about NRL superstar Jarryd Hayne, interim Gold Coast co-coach Terry Matterson has simply had enough.

Matterson refused to comment on Hayne's performance in Saturday's 26-14 loss to Canterbury at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday.

The visit of the Bulldogs - who had lost seven consecutive matches on the road - presented an opportunity for Hayne to fire back at his critics.

Instead, the most memorable moment Hayne delivered for the 10,887 fans came 16 minutes from time when his attempt at a long downfield kick sprayed off the side of his boot and well over the sideline on the full.

The Bronx cheers that accompanied the kick around the ground - and a forward pass moments later - would be a concern to the Titans' board, who have staked plenty on their marquee man.

Matterson believes the Hayne focus is overblown however.

"I'd rather talk about the team than one p layer really because this team's not about one player," Matterson said when asked to assess Hayne's performance.

Hayne himself agreed a focus on team is the key to the Titans hauling themselves out of this latest mess.

"As a whole squad we haven't achieved what we wanted to achieve at the start of the year," Hayne told reporters following the defeat.

"It doesn't matter what individuals you've got in the team, it's about everyone banding together and sticking to the process."

Hayne will have one last chance to impress in 2017 next weekend when the Titans play the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium.
