Gold Coast will boast one of the most exciting scrumbase partnerships in the NRL from 2016 onwards after boom playmaker Kane Elgey re-signed with the club on a new two-year deal.
Elgey, considered the hottest up-and-coming pivot in the NRL, rejected overtures from Manly to stay on the Gold Coast, the Titans announced on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old former Australian Schoolboy and NYC player of the year has enjoyed a stunning start to his NRL career, scoring two tries in his opening five games and piloting the Titans to an upset win over the Warriors in Auckland last start.
With Cherry-Evans to join the Titans next year, the club now has a halves partnership to base a premiership winning team around.
A Tugan Seahawks junior, Elgey said the chance to stay on the Gold Coast was a key factor in his decision.
"In the end I wanted to stay on the Gold Coast with my family and friends around me and with my teammates and coaching staff I have a lot of respect for, even though it was a very tempting opportunity presented by Manly," Elgey said.
"I'm happy here and (coach) Neil Henry gave me my opportunity in the NRL and is a great coach. I'm just relieved I have made the decision and can now get on with my football and I'm excited to hopefully be able to play with Daly Cherry-Evans too."
Titans boss Graham Annesley fended off a big money offer from Manly to retain Elgey.
"We are absolutely delighted Kane has decided to commit not only to the Titans but also the local community where he has learned his football," Annesley said.
"Hopefully it will inspire a whole new generation of local talent hoping to follow in his footsteps."
