Titans to turn up defence against Manly

Defence has been the focus for Gold Coast as they prepare for Saturday night's clash with Manly at Cbus Super Stadium.

Gold Coast coach Neil Henry acknowledges the NRL's most prolific attack needs to shore up its defence if the Titans are to be a force in this year's competition.

The Titans lead the league with 45 tries, closely followed by Saturday night's opponents Manly with 42, but it is the other end of the field that has been a focus for Henry this week.

"We conceded six tries last weekend, some of those were long range, clean breaks through our line," Henry said of last Saturday's 38-36 win over Melbourne.

"I'm sure (Manly coach) Trent Barrett will be looking at that, we were pretty vulnerable on the short side."

After winning just one of their opening seven games, Gold Coast have climbed to 11th on the ladder on the back of three straight wins, thanks largely to their ability to put points on the board.

The run started with two late tries to get over the line against premiers Cronulla, before piling on more than 30 points in back-to-back wins over Newcastle and Melbourne.

But as good as their attack has been, the defence has been terrible, conceding the second most points in the NRL.

The Titans have leaked 26 points or more on six occasions already this season - compared to last-placed Newcastle having conceded the same amount only four times.

Boosting their chances of containing the Sea Eagles on Saturday night will be the absence of star fullback Tom Trbojevic, the Origin contender to miss 6-8 weeks after suffering knee and ankle injuries last weekend.

Trbojevic has been the focal point of Manly's attack in 2017, his 13 line breaks the best in the NRL, while he is fourth for line break assists and third amongst fullbacks for tackle busts.

"It's a pretty big blow, he's been sensational," Henry said.

"His touches in the game against the Broncos (last weekend) made him a handful in the middle of the park."

Gold Coast are confident Jarryd Hayne will be fit to take the park against Manly, having left the field late in the win over the Storm with nerve damage to his knee.

He was seen walking comfortably around the club's practice facility on Tuesday after completing training in the morning.

The Titans welcome back Dale Copley who will start on the wing in place of Dan Sarginson who dislocated his shoulder last week.
