Today's Birthday March 31: Scottish actor Ewan McGregor (1971-).
Ewan McGregor started out in a British television series and went on to become one of the world's popular actors.
Born on March 31, 1971 in Scotland, McGregor was told by his parents that if he was not enjoying school he should instead pursue something he wanted to do.
Taking their advice, he dropped out. Following in the footsteps of an actor uncle, he studied drama at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama for three years.
McGregor dropped out just before graduation in 1993.
He was offered the starring role of Private Mick Hopper in Lipstick On Your Collar, the 1993 British drama series written by Dennis Potter.
In 1994, McGregor had his first notable movie role in Shallow Grave, and followed that with a part in Pillow Book (1996).
His portrayal of a heroin addict in Danny Boyle's 1996 film Trainspotting gained McGregor critical acclaim.
McGregor continued to build his profile with roles in Emma (1996), Brassed Off (1997) and A Life Less Ordinary (1997).
In 1999 McGregor started work on the first three Star Wars episodes in his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Between those films he squeezed in other projects, including Moulin Rouge! (directed by Australia's Baz Luhrmann), Down With Love and Big Fish.
Although Long Way Round (2004) and Long Way Down (2007), the TV documentary series about his motorcycles adventures with Charley Boorman, were very successful, McGregor never left film.
His recent movies include Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (2011), The Impossible (2012) and August: Osage County (2013).
In 2014, McGregor is due to appear in five films.
He is married to French production designer Eve Mavrakis and the couple have four daughters.
