Today's birthday, May 2: English singer and songwriter, Lily Allen (1985-)

Lily Allen burst onto the music scene in 2006 with her unique sound and tendency to speak her mind, flaunting her British accent, wit and youth.

Born on May 2, 1985, in Hammersmith London, Allen's family moved around the city and she attended 13 different schools.

She dropped out of a boarding school at 15, after having been expelled from several other schools.

Allen's parents were both in the entertainment industry and Allen spent a lot of time with their famous friends growing up.

She was especially close to Clash singer Joe Strummer during her turbulent adolescence.

Warner Music signed Allen in 2005, but she later switched to Regal Records and uploaded her music onto MySpace, where music fans could easily access her music.

Her songs were distributed on the internet, which eventually led to attention from music publications and positive reviews.

Alright Still, Allen's debut album, was released in the UK in mid 2006.

The album was successful in Australia with the single Smile reaching 14 on the ARIA charts.

Many of her songs are playful and witty tunes about breaking-up with bad boyfriends, and she has a large female following.

Her cheekiness has not been restricted to her recordings, as she is renowned for making crude public comments about other celebrities and her own drug use.

Her second album, It's not Me it's You (2009), went to number one in the UK, Australia and Canada and spawned hit single The Fear.

Allen's musical career has been relatively quiet since as she embraced motherhood.

Her first daughter Ethel Mary Cooper was born in 2011, a year after she suffered the still birth of a baby boy six months into her pregnancy.

Her second daughter, Marnie Rose, was born last year.

Allen's controversial comeback album, Sheezus is due for release on her birthday, 2014.
