Todd Carney's coach is fuming over the tackle which left the controversial former NRL star with broken ribs.

Carney was hit from behind in a crunching tackle by fellow former Sydney Rooster Lama Tasi just after he passed the ball late in his Catalan Dragons' thrilling 40-40 Super League draw with Salford in Perpignan.

Carney will miss three to four weeks after suffering the injury in only his second appearance in Super League after joining the Catalans' on a three-year contract.

Referee Phil Bentham ruled that Tasi was committed to the tackle on the No.6.

Salford rocketed to a 22-point lead before Carney sparked a Dragons' revival.

The Dragons led by eight points with five minutes remaining before Salford locked the game up after Corey Paterson's second try and a 79-minute Josh Griffin penalty.

Coach Laurent Frayssinous was furious his Dragons succumbed to the last-minute penalty when fullback Morgan Escare was pinged for walking off the mark.

Frayssinous was also fuming over Tasi's tackle on his playmaker.

"It is not acceptable (penalty), the same as it is not acceptable that there is a late tackle on Todd Carney that has left him in the hospital with a broken rib," he said.

"I expect Tasi to be charged but I also thought he should have been shown a card."
