A three-year-old girl continues to fight for life in a Sydney hospital after her mother jumped in front of a train while holding her, in the city's west.

The 30-year-old mother died in the Wednesday afternoon incident at Harris Park train station, police said.

Witnesses reportedly managed to pull the three-year-old alive from beneath the train.

The incident was recorded on CCTV, which showed the woman, who was carrying her child, deliberately stepping into the path of the oncoming train as it arrived, police said.

The toddler was taken to the Children's Hospital at Westmead where she remains in a critical condition.
