Japan has reduced the seating and slashed the cost of its planned stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after public opposition to the earlier approved design.
The Cabinet approved a revised plan on Friday that would cap the price tag at Y155 billion ($A1.79 billion), down from the plan for a Y252 billion ($A2.91 billion) stadium that the government abruptly scrapped in July.
The plan calls for a 68,000-seat stadium for the Olympics, down from 80,000, though it would be expandable to 80,000 for later events.
The government plans to seek bids for construction of the stadium based on the new parameters. The abandoning of the previous plan has put it under tight time pressure to finish in time for the 2020 Games.
