Tomic loses ATP opener at Los Cabos Open

Australian Bernard Tomic made an early exit from the Los Cabos Open after being beaten in straight sets by Egor Gerasimov.

Bernard Tomic suffered a straight-sets loss to Egor Gerasimov in the first round of the Los Cabos Open.

The Australian world No.153 was unable to take advantage of any of his four break point chances in the one hour 10 minute match, losing 6-4 6-3 to his lower-ranked Belarusian opponent.

Tomic's win-loss record in 2018 is 4-6 at ATP Tour and Grand Slam level with the one-time world No.17 having played more matches in qualifying after his rankings slide since last year.

Fifth seed and defending champion Sam Querrey needed only 49 minutes to beat Mexican wild card Lucas Gomez 6-2 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting with Gerasimov.

"I feel like I played well. It's good to get the first match out of my way and hopefully just keep playing better and better," Querrey said.

Eighth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez overcame Egyptian Mohamed Safwat 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to set a clash with Brit Cameron Norrie, who swept Indian qualifier Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-2 6-2.

Other first-round winners were Quentin Halys, Peter Polansky and Marcos Giron.

Top seed Juan Martin del Potro will face American qualifier Giron on Wednesday as he attempts to complete the Mexican double this week after claiming the title in Acapulco in March.
