Bernard Tomic has battled hard but ultimately his inability to curtail John Isner's served proved decisive in a straight-sets loss at the ATP Tour's New York Open.
Tomic was unable to earn a single break-point chance against the top seed with Isner coming out on top 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 to progress to the quarter-finals.
Isner served 27 aces to Tomic's 13, the American dropping just nine points on serve all match.
His opponent in the last eight will be Tomic's fellow Australian Jordan Thompson, who fought back from a set down to win his second-round encounter against qualifier Christopher Eubanks.
World No.60 Thompson dropped the first set before he found his form to prevail 4-6 6-1 6-4.
Italian Paolo Lorenzi overcame American Ryan Harrison 4-6 6-4 6-4 in their second-round match to reach the quarters.
In first-round action on Wednesday, Denis Istomin accounted for Mackenzie McDonald 4-6 6-2 6-3 while Moldovan Radu Albot survived 37 aces from Ivo Karlovic to outlast the veteran Croatian 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5).
