Australia's Bernard Tomic banked himself a confidence-boosting straights-sets win over American Kevin King in the first round of the Libema Open at Hertogenbosch on Tuesday.

Tomic, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2011, is trying to reignite his career after slipping to 181st in the rankings and found form with a solid 6-4 6-2 victory in the Dutch tournament.

The grasscourt-loving Queenslander will next meet sixth-seed Robin Haase, who defeated Ivo Karlovic on Monday.

Aussie qualifier Alex Bolt also had an impressive win against Canadian Vasek Pospisil in three sets - 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 - and next plays American wild card Mackenzie McDonald, who put out eighth seed Andreas Seppi 6-4 6-2.

But Australia's John-Patrick Smith was unable to match his fellow countrymen as he lost to Barcelona Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recorded his first grasscourt victory on the ATP Tour.

Greek fifth-seed Tsitsipas battled to a 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Smith, who replaced injured Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the first-round clash.

The 19-year-old, who is 37th in the ATP singles rankings, will face Istanbul Open runner-up Malek Jaziri in the second round after the Tunisian beat Max Purcell 6-2 6-3 in less than an hour.
