Bernard Tomic will look to repeat the feats of Nick Kyrgios by taking advantage of an Olympics-depleted field when he enters the Los Cabos tournament as a second seed in Mexico.
Kyrgios jumped two spots to be 16th in the world rankings when he won the Atlanta Open last week as a second seed in a field decimated by the Games in Rio.
World No.20 Tomic can do likewise as he aims to defend his title after the ATP tournament was moved from Colombia, where it was held last July.
Tomic has not won since then despite his desperation to enter the world top 10, as his titles list sits stagnant at four.
The Queenslander will receive a bye through to the second round of the tournament, where he will face the winner of lowly ranked Brazilian Thiago Monteiro or world No.72 Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
Provided he wins that, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro is likely to meet him in the quarter-finals before a potential clash with No.3 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.
Spain's Feliciano Lopez is the top seed at world No.18, just two ranking spots ahead of Tomic.
Tomic opted to skip the Rio Olympics in May citing a busy playing schedule and he had already committed to the Mexican tournament.
