Tomic thrashed by Gasquet at Open

John Tomic watched on from the stands as his son Bernard was beaten in straight sets by Richard Gasquet at the French Open.

The return of his controversial father and coach to the grand slam arena has failed to stop Bernard Tomic suffering a heavy first-round defeat at the French Open.

The Australian was dispatched 6-2 6-1 7-5 by French 12th seed Richard Gasquet in match lasting one hour and 37 minutes on Tuesday.

It continued a poor run of results for 21-year-old Tomic since having hip surgery in February following the Australian Open.

John Tomic was courtside at a major tournament for the first time since his 12-month ATP ban expired earlier this month.

Wearing a black and green hooded jumper, sunglasses and a blue cap, he watched on as Tomic hit 36 unforced errors in an erratic display on the Suzanne Lenglen showcourt.

After trailing 2-0 early, Tomic looked up for the battle and fought back to 2-2.

However, from there he lost 11 straight games as Gasquet raced to a two-set lead.

To Tomic's credit, he didn't completely fade away in the final set, but he never really looked like making a match of it.

Tomic's ranking has slipped to 80 in the world, having won just one match since his surgery and it's expected it will take some time for him to regain his full strength and range of movement.

Gasquet has also had injury concerns recently, having not played for almost two months with a back complaint, but he didn't need to overexert himself in setting up a second-round clash with Argentine Carlos Berlocq.

John Tomic was banned for headbutting his son's former training partner, Thomas Drouet, during last year's Madrid Masters and given a suspended jail sentence by a Spanish court.
