There has been mixed results for Australians at the Citi Open in Washington, with a win for Bernard Tomic but a loss for Lleyton Hewitt.

Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has eased into the third round of the Citi Open in Washington.

Bernard Tomic eased into the third round of the Citi Open in Washington on Tuesday with a straight sets win over David Goffin, but Lleyton Hewitt won't be joining him.

Tomic, the 14th-seed, saw off his Belgian opponent 6-1 6-3 at William HG FitzGerald Tennis Centre.

However, Hewitt went down in straight sets to American Ryan Harrison 6-3 7-5.

In the women's event, top-seeded wild card Angelique Kerber had few problems in knocking out qualifier Irina Falconi 6-2 6-3.

Britain's Heather Watson beat America's Alexandra Mueller 6-7 6-4 6-3 to set up a fourth round clash against fourth seed Alize Cornet, 6-1 6-3 conqueror of Yanina Wickmayer.

Elsewhere, fifth seed Sorana Cirstea advanced after Lesia Tsurenko retired while trailing 7-5, 1-1.
