Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has thanked the Australian public in a brief appearance outside Kirribilli House in Sydney.
"Shortly, Margie and I will be driving out of Kirribilli House for the last time as residents," he said.
"I just want to say in a heartfelt way to the people of Australia, it has been a tremendous honour to be your prime minister and I thank you very, very much indeed."
Mr Abbott, who was ousted by Malcolm Turnbull in a Liberal leadership ballot on Monday, did not attend parliament for the rest of the week.
Earlier today, he spoke to RAAF members and staff before getting on a VIP jet at the Fairbairn air base in Canberra.
