Tony Romo takes step closer to NFL return

Quarterback Tony Romo has figured in a Dallas Cowboys' practice session as he prepares for an NFL return after a back injury.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has returned to the practice field on a limited basis for the first time since sustaining a compression fracture in his back in August.

Romo was not in full uniform but was able to throw passes without any issues during the portion of practice open to the media.

He tossed pre-practice passes and then alternated with Dak Prescott and Mark Sanchez in throwing to the Cowboys' backup receivers and tight ends.

Romo's throws were anywhere from 5 to 25 yards in length and had good velocity, according to ESPN.

Coach Jason Garrett said he was unsure whether Romo would do more later in the week.

Prescott, who has passed for 1,486 yards with seven touchdown passes and just one interception in helping the Cowboys post a 5-1 record, will start Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles (4-2).

The New England Patriots officially announced the trade for linebacker Kyle Van Noy from the Detroit Lions.

Van Noy, 25, is in his third NFL season after originally joining Detroit as a second-round pick (40th overall) out of BYU in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Arizona Cardinals promoted rookie wide receiver Chris Hubert from the practice squad to the active roster.

Hubert spent the pre-season with the Cardinals and was on the team's practice squad for the first week of the season until he was released on September 13.
