The ACCI has stood down head economist Burchell Wilson over allegations he posted offensive comments to Facebook including one in which he allegedly described Joe Hockey as a "fat little bastard".

Mr Wilson was stood down yesterday by ACCI CEO Kate Carnell, Fairfax Media reports.

"Today I have been made aware of a number of offensive, derogatory and completely unacceptable Facebook posts allegedly made by ACCI chief economist Burchell Wilson," Ms Carnell said.

"After learning of the matter, I spoke to Mr Wilson and directed him to stand down from his position pending a thorough investigation.

"This is a matter we are taking very seriously."

The announcement came after allegations surfaced that Mr Wilson posted a string of offensive comments to his Facebook page targeting Muslims, refugees, the disabled and Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey.

A complaint was reportedly emailed to the ACCI about the posts with screen grabs from Mr Wilson’s private Facebook account.

Mr Wilson was seeking legal advice, The Australian reports.

"I've spoken to the ACT Police today as I have genuine concerns for my safety from this complainant," Mr Wilson said.

"I'm disappointed my CEO didn’t consider my personal safety or the safety of her staff before standing me down.

"This lunatic is coming after me purely for political reasons."

According to The Australian, it has not been confirmed whether the posts are genuine.
