Snooker's top female player has failed in her bid to become the first woman to reach the world championship finals.

Reanne Evans lost 10-8 to former world champion Ken Doherty in the first of three qualifying rounds.

The 29-year-old Evans, who has won the past 10 women's world titles, received an invitation to compete in the qualifiers.

Evans said: "I'm happy to have stuck in there with a player who has been world champion and has so much experience."

The world championship starts on April 18 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, northern England.
