Top seed Peng knocked out of Thailand Open

Peng Shuai, the top seed at the Thailand Open, has been defeated by Misaki Doi to throw the tournament wide open.

Top-seeded Peng Shuai of China has fallen to Japan's Misaki Doi 6-3 2-6 6-2 in the second round of the Thailand Open.

Doi, in their first meeting, handed Peng her earliest loss in Pattaya on Wednesday. Peng had reached at least the quarter-finals in four previous appearances.

Doi's first quarter-final since October 2013 will be against seventh-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, who beat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-1 3-6 6-0.

Former two-time champion Vera Zvonareva ousted eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

Zhang served for the first set at 5-4 and 6-5, and had a set point in the tiebreaker at 6-5.

Zvonareva finally took the set after an hour with a sharp backhand cross-court winner.

Zvonareva, champion in 2009 and 2010 and entered this year as a wild card, pulled away in the second set as Zhang committed errors.

The Russian next faces Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who put away Yuliya Beygelzimer of Ukraine 6-1 6-1.

Meanwhile, Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova and Croatian-Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, who will face each other in the second round, combined as a doubles pairing to defeat Russian duo Elizaveta Kulichkova and Evgeniya Rodina 6-7 (7-5) 6-2 10-7.
