Fire crews are battling a blaze at a North Adelaide townhouse which has stopped traffic and caused smoke to drift over the area.

The Metropolitan Fire Service says crews rushed to the two-storey residence in Finiss Street shortly before 6pm on Saturday.

"The incident is causing lot of smoke to drift over North Adelaide and surrounding suburbs," the MFS said.

"Residents in the area are advised to stay indoors and shut all windows and doors."
