Toxic alcohol kills six at Ukraine party

Six people have died in a central Ukrainian town after consuming toxic alcohol at a party.

Toxic alcohol at a party in a central Ukrainian town has killed three men and three women, authorities say.

Another partygoer was brought to hospital unconscious, authorities reported onTuesday.

The deceased partygoers, aged 32 to 52, had consumed the hard liquor on Monday night at a private residence in the town of Boryspil, about 20km east of the capital, Kiev.

Consumers of surrogate alcohol products risk poisoning from methanol and other toxic substances that can result when the alcohol is not strictly processed into potable ethanol.

Authorities have opened a murder case and are trying to figure out how the partygoers obtained the drink.

A photo of a generic plastic canister that had contained the substance was posted on a police website.

Two years ago, cheap alcohol purchased on a website caused a wave of poisonings in the country, with more than 50 people dying from consuming the product.
