Toxic smoke from fibreglass factory fire

A fire at a Melbourne fibreglass factory is under control but people are being advised to avoid the area due to the thick toxic smoke.

A Melbourne suburb has been blanketed in toxic black smoke by a fibreglass factory blaze.

The fire, which erupted on Saturday afternoon, is now under control but residents in Heidelberg West are being advised to remain indoors.

Black, acrid smoke from the burning fibreglass drifted over the suburb and prompted the public warning from firefighters.

Firefighters say the blaze has been contained to the factory but a HAZMAT team has moved in because of concerns over chemicals on the premises.

A decontamination zone has been established.
