Trade unions royal commission heads to WA

The WA branch of the AWU will be a key focus at hearings for an inquiry into trade union corruption in Perth this week.

The inquiry into trade union corruption moves to Perth this week.

Public hearings for the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption are scheduled to be held in the West Australian capital from Monday to Wednesday, and will examine matters connected to the Australian Workers' Union and the Transport Workers Union.

The inquiry, which began last month, is examining allegations of corrupt practices within unions, including bribery, improper fundraising and secret commissions.

One of the claims is that figures in the AWU's WA branch set up a secret slush fund in the early 1990s and used some of the money to help officials win elections.

The inquiry has already heard the AWU's so-called Workplace Reform Association began issuing invoices from about April 1992 to Thiess Contractors Pty Ltd in relation to services undertaken for the Dawesville Channel project south of Perth. Evidence was provided that no such work was carried out.

It was further alleged thousands of dollars from the association fund was used to pay for renovations at Julia Gillard's then Melbourne home in 1994, an allegation the former prime minister denies.

Witnesses this week will include Christine Anne Campbell, who was in the early 1990s a secretary for Ms Gillard's then-partner Bruce Wilson at the AWU's WA branch.

Evidence will also be provided by former Thiess and Woodside workers.
